Wage:                   $16.00 - $19.00 per hour, DOQ

Hours:                   25 hours per week

 

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under general supervision from the Parks Superintendent, the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, directing, and implementing the overall administration of a well-rounded city recreation program that meets the needs of the residents.  Work includes organizing, budgeting, planning, coordinating, and evaluating the recreational needs of Parowan City and its residents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Plans and manages a comprehensive citywide recreation program. 
  • Ensures that the current recreation programs are continued.  Researches additional sports, leagues, and programs to implement and help grow the city’s recreation program.
  • Develops, interprets, and implements parks and recreation policies and procedures. Continuously monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of procedures for programs and activities. 
  • Develops, negotiates, and supervises the city’s recreational activities and reservation schedules for parks and ball fields. Works as liaison between the city and the high school for recreation programs. Schedules facilities with the Iron County School District, Iron County and any other entities for program requirements.  Maintains administrative systems for facility and program scheduling, calendaring, and other functions.
  • Performs public relations duties: work cooperatively with youth, parents, and organizations; responds to and resolves public inquiries and complaints; handles all league rule enforcement; prepares information, marketing, and promotion of parks and recreation programs and facilities, utilizing web pages and social media.
  • Recruits volunteers to assist with various programs.  Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with volunteers, program organizers, citizens, contractors, and vendors.
  • Participates in long range and strategic planning.
  • Helps prepare and manage an annual recreation program budget and ensures that it is adhered to.  Prepares budget reports as required.
  • Works with Parks Superintendent on purchasing supplies and operating inventory for recreation programs.  Codes bills for payment.  Develops alternative funding sources for programs and improvements with the approval of the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council.
  • Prepares and keeps logs, records, detailed reports, and standard operating procedures on activities for city’s archives, including: reports concerning programs, cost, participant numbers, equipment and facility use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of local government operations, processes, and services; general marketing and advertising practices and procedures; local public interest assessment methods; documentation procedures; and technical writing. 
  • Skilled in office management duties; word processing; spreadsheets, composing correspondence, handling multiple projects with interruptions, prioritizing, and organizing workload to meet deadlines.
  • Experience in Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Working knowledge of recreation programs and their management; working knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports; working knowledge of modern office and bookkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to participate in active sports and recreation activities; ability to organize and direct programs; ability to work nights and/or weekends as required to oversee recreation programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, other agencies, and the public; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  1. High school graduation or GED; and
  2. One (1) year of related experience; or
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  4. Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hand and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
